SCTE Sierra Chapter - The News
The Road Ahead with Remote PHY Print E-mail
Written by Eric Heitz
Tuesday, 13 June 2017 13:11
"O.C. Communications has been sitting shotgun on the road to technological advancement for over 30 years. Our clients drive us, and we are along for the ride ready to take on whatever comes our way. We get a bird’s eye view on what is trending in the industry, and our sights are currently focused on Remote PHY and its role in the Gigabit Era.

The Gigabit Era calls for an upgrade to all-IP delivery of our services. Consumers now demand faster and better networks. According to CableLabs, Remote PHY will be able to address the problem of crowded headend space that we are currently dealing with by moving the DOCSIS PHY chip closer to the customer while leaving the rest of the hardware centralized. By placing the PHY chip deeper into the core of the network, customers will have the ability to access faster speeds with higher capacities.

What does this information mean to you? With the growing popularity of video on demand and HSD voice quality, you can bet that the expansion of distributed access architecture will play a crucial role in consumer’s growing demands. Our eyes are focused on the road ahead, and Remote PHY is on the horizon. "

Cupertino Fiber Deep Project Print E-mail
Written by Eric Heitz
Tuesday, 31 January 2017 09:20
The Cupertino Fiber Deep project was one of Comcast’s first architectural and technological advancements designed to reduce Node density, increase bandwidth and provide a conduit for supporting advanced services. Cupertino key statistics include a system designed to support 22,510 homes passed and approximately 350 nodes. The Node density was reduced from 833 Homes Per Node to an average of 64 Homes Per Node.

As Comcast reviewed the metrics they have noticed a reduction in repair call volume of 37.6% and a 32.3% reduction in repair truck roll rates. Even more impressive are the results seen in reviewing customer metrics, where Cupertino Dissatisfaction scores and loyalty indicators bore great improvement.

Comcast has begun a similar project in the Sacramento, Ca. footprint that is expected to be a multi-year project using the lessons learned in the Cupertino, Ca. conversion.
