From: Sierra SCTE Chapter Active Board Member:  Ivan R. Dieu (Retired…)

A few personal benefits from becoming a member of the SCTE, Society of Cable Television Engineers = “Priceless!”

In 1981 I joined CableData, a Billing company for Top MSO’s within the Cable TV Industry on Arden Way close to Watt Ave. in Sacramento, now a “Safeway” I believe.  I reported directly to Robert Mathews, founder, and Susie Mathews, wife and co-owner of CableData.  I directed and managed several “Top Company Leaders”, including the Benefits and Privileges Department, Fleet department, and a 250 people per day Lunchroom.

From there, the next 10 to 15 years was rapid “Growth” with various Cable manufacturers.  I was recruited to “Oak Industries,” by a former CableData Sales Director for Oak.  Early on I met Steve Allen, who invited me to join the SCTE Sierra Chapter that he started, believe 1985’ish.  A few years later, while attending the annual National SCTE CableTech convention in Las Vegas, I was offered a West Coast Sales Representative position with Pioneer Communications.  (Many “Older” engineers will remember the M-35 set-top boxes not so fondly, with “Clip the Orange Wire” security problems…)  Pioneer was one the greatest sales accomplishments by selling their “Addressable” set-top boxes.  Along with Mike Hayashi (whom went on to become CIO at TW Cable), we sold TW San Diego one of the first Addressable Systems.  TW San Diego at that time was the largest Cable System in the United States and the deal was worth 15-20+ million dollars.  Robert Lonn, the Dir of Engineering at TW in San Diego was a member of his local SCTE SD Chapter, which proved networking and relationship building with others in the SCTE can be very valuable.

After the Pioneer deal, General Instruments, which became Motorola, and is now Arris, made an employment offer I couldn’t refuse.  I enjoyed much success while working at General Instruments and made many MSO deals. I gave several technical talks at various SCTE Regional Engineer Conferences in the West.  Over years, I gained many extremely valuable relationship that I wouldn’t have, had I not joined the SCTE.  These relationships established through the SCTE helped my 35 year career in “Cable” and attributed employment and sales success, and many other advantages in larger part by becoming an SCTE Member.  Finding loyalty of members, job advancement, training benefits, awards that are available for us members and families a “Beneficial Hidden Treasure”!

In conclusion, by joining your local SCTE Chapter, you WILL advance your career faster, Associate Closer to “Top Brass” MSO Cable decision maker Executives, Construction Contractors, within our Fantastic Industry!

Brief Examples - “Only a few” below listed, Cable/SCTE wise, associated/“Grew up” within our Industry, and Remain friends to this day: Comcast: Tony Werner, Ed Marchetti, and Jeff Votaw.
