What can the SCTE do for me? Print E-mail
Written by Brandon Mehrkens

What can the SCTE do for me? This is a question I am asked frequently; it is a question I once asked myself.
Before talking to ‘the right” people, I was oblivious to the training and networking opportunities that had been at my disposal from the day I became a new hire. Blinded by the day-to-day duties of a newly hired CommTech, it seemed there would never be time for me to enroll in classes geared towards my new trade, or sit through seminars with a stacked route of installs. Then, I talked to “the right” people. They all but laughed when I explained why I had not taken advantage of the self-paced courses, and certifications offered by the SCTE. That is when things started to change in my career, coincidence? Maybe.
I like to believe that while it did take a good amount of effort on my part, the relationships I have made, and the knowledge I have gained through the Society not only made me a better candidate, but a driven industry expert. I am now a Network Technician in Sacramento, as well as an officer of the Sierra Chapter SCTE Board.
What is holding you back?

My 2018 Cable-Tec EXPO Experience Print E-mail
Tuesday, 27 November 2018 10:42

I have been a member of the SCTE for about 5 years now and have attended the local cable expo a couple of times. Last month I had the pleasure of attending my first national SCTE-ISBE Cable-Tec Expo in Atlanta. To summarize in one short palindrome: WOW!

There were trainings available focused on all of the newest technologies and even future concepts currently in development. The training topics varied, ranging from Wireless Technologies and Security, to the Internet of Things, operational changes and more. There were over 100 industry speakers and over 40 workshops so whatever your area of interest, there was plenty of relevant training for everyone. In the trainings, you are able to sit among some of the industry leaders and hear about new products and technologies straight from the people developing and deploying them.

With over 10,000 attendees and 400+ exhibitors, the networking opportunities throughout the week were priceless. The exhibit floor was massive, boasting over 300,000 square feet of seemingly endless products on display. When taking a break from the training, you can wander through the maze of product demonstrations and get hands on training with the latest and greatest technologies.

All in all, this was an incredible experience that I will definitely look forward to attending again in the future.
